The Issue of Cybersecurity

Cyber security is something that our country needs desperately in order to protect ourselves. But first of all, why do we need cyber security? Currently, majority of the devices that we own (cellphones, tablets, laptops, TV's, cars, home security systems etc,) are connected to the Internet. This is called the Internet of Things (IoT). Since you use the same internet as people across the globe do, your devices can be easily hacked. The same way, businesses and even governments can be hacked and manipulated by the hacker. A hacker can hack our nuclear systems, power grids and other sensitive defense installations and take control of them. Without cyber security, every single device connected to the internet is at risk of being hacked. By 2020, there will be over 30 billion devices in use across the globe. Apple, if it was hacked, would put thousands of terabytes of customer data on the web. It has happened to Target twice already, and who knows to whom it will happen next. Hospitals are at risk of being hacked, causing medical equipment to falter in times of crisis and need. We urgently need a way to prevent all of these catastrophes from happening, and this can only be achieved through cyber security. In our schools, we need to better educate kids on the internet, cyber security and the positives and negatives of IoT. Companies need to better cooperate with the government to tackle and solve this problem. We need more steps to be taken to prevent a hack or crash happening in our country. This is an issue that needs to be looked at by lawmakers, and they need to do something about it, because the future of humanity and the world of technology depends on it.
